Orff instruments for children began to develop in the late 1920's and they were modeled after wooden African instruments. Orff instruments work so well in elementary school because they have removable bars allowing for great success among students. Carl Orff believed that a successful and fun experience is the basis for a positive learning process. There are many kinds of Orff instruments including Xylophones, Metallophones, and Glockenspiels.
At Valley Ranch Some of our grades have started playing Orff instruments. We have been exploring our musical creativity and practice our rhythmic skills with these instruments. Second grade has learned their first song "Che Che Koolay" on Orff instruments, and had a blast doing so! Che Che Koolay is an African song from the country Ghana, so it is very fitting to play on Orff instruments.
